Reformed Ogboni Fraternity

FOUNDING FATHERS OF ROF

Took upon themselves the arduous task of founding the fraternity to respond to several issued that were prominent in the colonial setting of the country now called Nigeria.

We must not forget that it was a period of of social and racial discrimination that was akin to the situation in apartheid South Africa. The leadership of the Fraternity was prominent in efforts to dismantle this racail discrimination. We should always proudly remember the bold move by Sir Adeyemo Alakija to end the color bar when in March 1947, he stormed the Bristol hotel in Lagos with his followers due to the refusal of the Greek owner of the hotel to sell a bottle of beer to him beacause he was black. He did this out of his desire for the universal brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of one Supreme Beign that makes racial discrimination most unreasonable.

The lord Bishops, during the colonial rule, imported their own types of fraternity into this country. These include Freemasonry, Odd Fellow, Forestry, Shepherdry e.t.c. The mentality of the colonies. Thus the founding of the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity represented a positive reaction in the struggle for cultural nationalism which aimed at emancipating our people from mental shackles that had been imposed by colonization.

ROF BRIEF HISTORY

The History of ROF as handed over to us, started with the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates into what is now known as Nigeria in 1914. We were told thact before the advent of Colonial Rule in this Country, particularly in Yoruba land, the Ogboni Osugbo was the government of the people. Some call this Ogboni Osugbo, or Ogboni.

During the Colonial Rule,the Bishop Lords imported into this country their type of Fraternity, such as Freemasonry, Odd Fellows, Shepherdry, Foresters, e.t.c. Our elites were enrollef into these Fraternities. The Churches in the early Christain world were persecuted in those dark days. Ironically they too did not spare both the Ogboni and the European Fraternities from persecution.

Out of the blues, however came a revolution within the church. A Clergy man of no means of order, an Archdeacon for that matter, decided to investigate and draw comparison between our OGboni and the European Fraternities vis-a-vis the Church. He has been a member of one of the European Fraternities - Freemasonry.
